However, I’m curious what the increase in immigrants (legal & illegal) since the 1980’s has done to the labor supply and wages. White collar jobs that tend to be hire paying get increased pressure with increases in HB1, EB2, EAD immigrants which leads to depression of wages. HB2 or illegals, will have an effect on blue collar jobs, but not as drastic effect as there aren’t too many Americans wanting to do those jobs. It is with those immigrants children, where the labor supply into higher paying blue collar and white collar jobs will be felt, again increasing the labor supply leads to decreasing wages. There isn’t a chance for the market to stabilize when immigrant quotas keep getting increased.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t have any immigration, but it must be much tightly regulated in order to help increase wages. Maybe a Swiss model should be something that is adapted here.
So the number of people entering the job market has certainly been a factor, but I'd also think that there's a lot more jobs out there than in prior years. I think the biggest problem right now is we have a lot of people who aren't equipped for the jobs that are needed in the real world. Womens studies isn't going to do chit for you when automated dispensaries take over your $15/hour minimum wage job at McDonalds, yet these are the types of morons we're graduating.

I'm a CPA by training yet even I have learned some basic coding/data skills to future-proof myself because I can see the writing on the wall that those who don't adapt to this new, big data/quantitively-driven world are pretty much fked. I don't know how to get people to learn to do basic math/programming, since American culture is so allergic to mathematical/scientific pursuits, but I don't see things getting better until we fix this basic issue of giving people participation medals in college instead of prepping them for the brave new world that's coming very quickly.

Yeah I think that problem can be fixed real quick with allowing student loan borrowers to wipe their debt if they declare bankruptcy and stop federal backing of student loans. Lenders aren’t going to risk losing 80k if Shania doesn’t get a job from her women’s studies degree.

Agreed with future proofing. At this point, everyone needs to know Excel and BI tools well in order to succeed. I’ve used Excel and VBA in the past to automate a lot of the administrative tasks that would take me hours to do otherwise. I wasn’t dumb enough to share that with anyone since it gave me a huge competitive advantage over my peers allowing me to get promoted much more quickly.

Some basic SQL would be great too, but a lot of companies aren’t going to allow users access into a DB without a real good reason.

I don't feel bad. The past two generations pushed so much moral degeneracy and globalism.

Yeah lets keep voting for policies that make us poor while giving money to illegal immigrants.

**** them. I hope they have to suck landlord boomer dink.

Congrats bro, good for you. So even though you're a 1st generation immigrant, and everything is supposed to be so much harder for you, and I'm sure there was so much racism and "hate" directed to you at every step of the way....Because America, while the most open, free, welcoming, and least racist society to ever exist....turns out it's actually the most oppressive, closed, racist society on earth (Sarcasm meter.....pegged off the charts!). The truth is, in America, nobody gives a chit about your color, struggles, background, or anything else....they care about your skills and ability to work hard. Unless you're white, then you really will be systemically discriminated against.

So - to what do you owe your success? Hard work, focus, and most importantly - being raised in a nuclear family with parents that instill traditional values of hard word, and guide you into high paying career paths. Please tell the people on this forum your big secret....or the secret "hack" to success. It's called - THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS, SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE BUST THEIR ASS!
I certainly sympathize with Boomers that a lot of people my age spend their money very foolishly and make poor decisions that they want other people to pay for. That said, I also think it's true that the Boomers have been pretty greedy/stingy and this has fked our generation in a lot of ways too. It's insane to me how my current firm hasn't raised salaries in over a decade despite the fact that life has gotten materially more expensive, the basic requirements for the job have become much more extensive, and the competition is much higher. It's possible for both parties to be partially at fault and I'd rather politicians try to figure out how to fix this mess before it gets worse instead of masturbating over who is more at fault.
Now here you are showing your young age and you've gone off the rails.

Why should your firm raise salaries ever again? Why should they care how expensive life has become?

Why wouldn't they ask more from their applicants, require more experience / credentials and keep your salary low?

This is a simple supply and demand problem - the US is overflowing with available labor and on top of it still admitting MORE THAN ONE MILLION LEGAL IMMIGRANTS every single year.

Since 2009 the majority of these immigrants have been ASIAN, followed by INDIAN - why would that be? Do you think this has anything to do with suppressing the wages of middle class and upper class incomes? You think immigration only targets cheap labor?

So while these "high tech" companies constantly complain about "skills gap" and labor shortage it is complete and utter BS. They are complaining because their COSTS will increase as the skills they want from their employees become worth more in a FREE market. But we don't have a free market - we have a government that does whatever the large donors and lobbyist class wants - namely - flooding the US with cheap labor so they can cut costs, increase the bottom line, and get huge CEO and executive level performance bonus' for making their companies more "profitable" at your expense.

The skills gap argument is such a farce. What companies need to be doing is succession planning from the bottom up. They need to identify hipo employees and start training them on the skills needed to advance.

This would increase employee engagement which increases productivity, increases retention, and allow for companies to operate smoothly. Any good leader should be identifying hipo employees to make their job easier and advance themselves up more quickly anyway. It’s completely short sighted to not do so. I think it speaks more to terrible leadership than anything.

Also, seems more cost effective than paying for transfers and sponsorships.

Why? It's cheaper to hire from outside the company when they need a higher position filled than it is to invest for years in one of their own...especially when employees are willing to jump ship for even a tiny pay increase.

Doubtful, the company if bringing outside hires, will either have to pay a fee as a percentage of the salary of the new employee, an hourly rate to the outside company if new employee is a contractor, in addition to potential immigration visa fees if the person requires a visa, or the salaries of HR to hire new people. That’s going to cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Whereas, they can keep their current employee, give them additional work to get them skilled up for the next role, and keep them at the same pay while doing so. Not to mention promotions usually are at the lower end of market rate Where new employees will be at the average or higher end of market rate.

I am quite heavily involved in graduate and professional development and I would freely admit that I would not want to be competing in today’s market

I have qualifications in law, economics (quant) and audit but when I see the level of education these kids have, and the junior jobs they’re applying for, I just think something is wrong

Now I know that’s a feature of economic progress and specialisation but the cost is insane also (my employer paid for my degrees and professional affiliations)

Although I didn’t realise it at the time, I had it pretty easy 20 years ago starting out

Lol damn, Daniel. Why are you so triggered? I literally said nothing about dealing with racism and "muh hardships". All I said was that I feel fortunate to have had parents that instilled in me the wisdom of hard work and education at an early age, which a lot of my peers have not, and have been moderately successful as a result. In fact, I'm attesting to the fact that I have managed to do well because I worked my ass off (thanks to my parents' teachings) while my other friends were partying in college and more worried about which frat they were rushing. Way to jump to conclusions/make everything about "muh racism" when it literally wasn't mentioned once. The point of that anecdote was to illustrate that it is possible for people to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps" to some extent and that I do kind of understand where Boomers are coming from when they say people my age are lazy. I then go on to mention how Boomers have also done some stupid chit to cause some of the issues today, so it's not one party that's solely to blame for what's going on in America.

Given you pretty much misunderstood the entire point of my post, the second part of yours isn't even worth my time to address. No phucking chit corporations are designed to maximize profit just as I'm incentivized to maximize my pay and minimize my costs of education. What exactly does that have to do with the fact that there are potentially negative externalities for younger generations and society as a whole when it gets too extreme? We're starting to see that now where even highly educated/in-demand people in Commiefornia/NYC can't afford to buy houses. They feel "cheated" by the system and are now flooding the rest of the country and voting for Bernie in new states to start the cycle all over again. Surely you can agree that radical political views aren't the best recipe for a healthy, functioning society, right? Idiots like you who just want to blame one party are precisely who I'm criticizing in my post. Just lol at calling me young. Age doesn't automatically fix stupid, buddy.

PS: corporations should care about competitive wages or else they'll lose highly qualified people like me to people who will pay them the going rate in the market. My firm literally is desperate right now because so many people have left that they're offering just about anyone qualified and being forced to over-correct after the mistakes they made in handling the Coronavirus.
