I saved and built it when I could pay for it. I was small business wise and even smaller now. But back then I had about 20 employees eventually building up to 60 range.

Dude....I dont have manicured hands.  I have built MANY projects and there is no project that would scare me.   I built my own helicopter and completely overhauld another.

But to give you an example, the 3rd gear synchro on my R8 started going, so I yanked the trans myself and had it rebuilt and I put it back in myself.   I dont mind a little grease afterall, I guess at heart I am a 'tradie' as you guys put it.

Besides realestate investments, for the past 10 years, I just design custom homes.    I have worked from home for the past 10 years.  No employees.   I design projects for clients and builders who have clients who want 'design/build'.

Like I said, I have taken a slower pace in life these past 10 years.   I pretty much get up around 10 every day and make some coffee, then go draw.   Life is good.

At times I feel like I should be doing more and there are sometimes I almost feel the traps of the drive that I wanted so badly to get away from.  But I dont do it.  I had considered starting up another business....but I like my time.     I do what I want when I want.    Yesterday I broke down the lotus and brought it to get repainted.  (it had a few blems in the top of the car I did not like).    Then I went out for lunch with a buddy.   I got home and laid on a raft in the pool for a while and then helped my daughter set up her laptop for school.   Then I took my son to soccer practice in the lambo and watched all 2 hours....stopped on the way home and got icecream.   Not a bit of work was done and I like that I can do that.

Today, I'm sitting at my desk just now for the first time.  I stayed up late with the wife last night so I am drinking my coffee and getting ready to do a little work.   Hard to see trading those freedoms for more 'stuff'.

Had to respond again to this post because it illustrates how closed minded people are and the assumptions they make.

My guess....is I have probably scrubbed a lot more grease, dirt and even sh!t out from my fingernails than you have. I have never been too good to do anything and in fact, it is the fact that I have fearlessly taken on just about any project in my life with the confidence that I can accomplish it.

So....no I am not a collector. I will give you an example. In 2009, I bought a helicopter that cost 525k. When I got it, I decided I wanted to go through it. It had 3 layers of paint and it started with that notion.

By the time I was said and done, I had it soda blasted to bare aluminum and full cockpit and avionics stripped. I rewired a new panel, had instruments re-furbed. I bought all new glass because I wanted it 'nice'. To give you an idea, the cost of just the glass was 34k. I installed all myself, and then painted the ship MYSELF. I have a good friend who is a AP mechanic and he handled all the required paperwork. He was required to supervise and inspect any work done and sign off on it for it to be legal.

So.....seriously. Show me what you have done. And just to be clear, I can pull out MANY things like this. This is what I have done my entire life. I decide to do something and then do it.

Only limitation I have now is time. I have to balance out what I would like to do and what I have time for. Eg, I wanted to build a RCR superlite coupe, but thinking I am going to just buy a Radical RXC 600R. I called on one last week. Yea, I guess I have some issues. Being afraid to do things myself is NOT one of them.

Can I now be worthy of calling myself a 'car guy' in your eyes?

And....to add. You also have to not be afraid to do work. I have rental properties that I manage myself. I got a call that a toilet was overflowing.

Turns out the teenage daughter of the tenant was flushing her tampons and weaves apparently down the toilet. How do I know? Because I pulled them out.

I have never turned away from any work in my life. I just do what needs to be done and try to rely as little on others as I can. It might not be glamourous, but it is all I know because no one showed me how to get here.

I think you might also be forgetting I am not only a helicopter pilot, but hold both commercial and instructor ratings. An instructor rating in helicopters is about the most challenging to get as you have to demonstrate mastery of what is arguably the most difficult machine to operate. Kind of like drifting a car, in 3 dimensions.

My point was specifically about trying to write off exotics as business expenses.   NOT car flipping.  Car flipping can indeed be done.  But to your other points, all is good and well about your model of financing 5 properties instead of buying one.   But what happens when another 2009 event happens.  You get wrecked and loose everything because banks make you personally guarantee everything.   Have a friend who thought your way.  Had about a 10 mil net worth going into 2007.  Used as much of 'other peoples money' as he could.   Got recked.  Bank took everything.   Luckily in 08 he felt some writing on the wall and stashed just over a million in gold.  Had he not, he would have lost it all.

I dont know what your financial position was in 08, but the tactics you are talking about work great in a good economy.  Not so much when it tanks.

A dinner pic with some of my buddies.  Many are WAY more successful than I am.  And none of these cars are financed.  Funny how the 'smart money' guys all claim to know more than people who really have gotten to the point where they can buy these things.   As I mentioned.  There is more than the spreadsheets.  There is also the mentality behind the people and how they spend their money and why.

Meet a great girl when she is 17 and you both have nothing.     Frankly I dont know what I would do now.  I have successful friends who are divorced, and they do the best they can to hide their wealth when dating.   One guy dailys a R8 and has 2-lambos, drives an old jeep out on dates.    It is tough and I could not imagine not having my wife.   She is what has made my life what it is.   And yes, she is attractive, but 1000 x prettier on the inside and wants nothing of anything material.    If I could tell you how to find that, I could probably be a lot richer!

FWIW [not much] I believe you qualify as a car guy. My paternal grandfather was a tinkerer, probably would get labeled a "maker" now. Not formally educated, he was a master machinist who built fighter jets as his day job and then bought and rebuilt wrecked cars at home for fun.

Not sure if you are joking or perhaps just a little 'off'. If no one has told you, simulation does not equal real life. That is not to say there is no benefit to sims. And I would say your sim experience would give you some benefit over a person who has never been on a track, but there are also places where it will hurt you and you will have to overcome 'bad' habits.
I wont take away from your claims of being a superior sim driver. Good for you. But you need a MAJOR reality check if you think that actually means you could 'jump in a car' and beat a guys lap times.

But to be clear, I think sims are cool. I recently got one to help my son with the transition to manual on the track to bring up his learning curve. I have found it helpful for me also. But it is NOT real. It helps in some areas though. Lines and awareness of sight-picture, sure. In manual cars, you get mapped in your head what gear each corner is..etc. But real....NO. I have found for me I am MUCH faster in the sim than in real life.

I also have friends who are very high-level drivers. Much better than you or I will ever be. The one guy tested for Williams racing in F1 8 years ago, but had medical problems that kept him off the F1 circuit. He has a sim and has helped me with some driving stuff. He drives a Radical SR8 as his 'track' car. And he said the same thing. He is way faster in the sim than in real life. But it is good for some things.

I have no idea how old you are, but you need to learn it is OK to learn from others and not everything has to be a competition. You kind of make yourself look silly. Just be you. It is ok. I am not the best at everything and had you just simply said you like sim racing, I would have thought that was cool. I would not look down on that.

Kat, I am fine. I dont care what label people put on me. I know that I am not defined by any of them. Good or bad, I am just me. I am still trying to figure out life. I have been though some crazy stuff, and if anyone is willing to listen, I think I have some stuff to share.

I do know one thing.... Marry a girl with more class, grace and style than you will ever have and your life will be a good one! I snuck this of my wife playing tonight. What do I have to complain about?

BRZ is an AWESOME car man! I love them. They were on my short list since I wanted my son to be able to learn to drive stick. If I did not get the lotus, I would probably have an FRS or BRZ right now. My son has a widebody one as the screensaver on his PC. Cool cars man!

I am not a big vintage guy, but one of the awesome things about this community is getting to meet others. We have a local guy who is a very high-end collector. I would not claim to be a friend, but rather an acquaintance. I felt honored to get invited to tour his collection with my son. Not a lot of people get to see it. It is valued at over 100mil. The Gt40 in the pic is the actual one that raced Lemans. You can see the 250gto in the back, also a privateer Lemans car. His collection was over the top, and I have way too many pics to post all. But good stuff. I can appreciate the older stuff but just not what I love.

Just me man. To be 100% honest, I am flattered that some of the younger dudes listen a little. I can remember when I was in my 20's there was a guy in his late 40's in the gym. I used just hope he would talk to me and I really looked up to him. He was not the biggest guy or the strongest, but I respected him so much because I never saw a guy that age in such great shape.

The thing I take the most pride in of this thread (besides my family) is NOT money or cars. It is that I am still in the grind, day by day hitting the gym and hope to for many years to come. You cant buy that or cheat it. Despite what some think, no amount of drugs will help you if you are not willing to put the time in. That is why none of the 'rich' people look like we do. It is too fukin hard and takes so much sacrifice and dedication. Dont think for a minute that if you could buy some drug or something all people with means would walk around looking like they have been in the gym for 20 years.

So we are all the same. The gym is the great equalizer. The bar does not care how much money you make. It does not care what college you went to. It does not care if you had to work late. It will just treat you the same and dare you to try to lift it. It also accepts failure and will be glad if you quit and never go back. 1000's of hands have gripped it, and most give up. A month, a year, even after a couple years....they all give up.

I am almost 50. 2 major accidents, broken neck, fractured spine, disk injuries. The bar is hoping I will quit and be just like every other person who has an excuse. Well, I am not doing it. I go in whether I want to or not and I tell the bar fuk you!

Most of you will quit. Life, kids, stress, time. It NEVER gets easier. I hope when one of you gets ready to, someone may think of this and choose the harder path.
