You can clear rooms with a standard 16" AR. It's not impossible contrary to what people believe but I feel you.

OP only buy the Remington if you're getting it for a purpose. I think they're great shottys personally.

No. You should never, ever, ever use birdshot for defensive purposes, ever. There are minimum penetration standards for duty loads in all firearms for a reason.

The best way to avoid overpenetration is to use the gun that gives you the highest probability of the round going into your target.

870 or Mossberg 500. Either is a good choice. I have a mossberg 500 tactical with a light and a knoxx stock, my brother has an 870. I've shot both. The 870 is nicer, but I'm fine with mine.

I prefer an AR-15. It's just a more versatile gun.

If you do get a shotgun, go shoot it. You would never want the first time firing one to be in a life and death situation. They are loud as fak, and the recoil is going to startle you the first time you pull the trigger. First time I shot a 12 gauge I immediately turned into a little bitch. After firing 20 or so rounds, you'll feel a lot more comfortable with one.

dont use an ar for home defense because you will shoot through multiple layers of drywall and kill your neighbor
Please dont listen to this guy, an AR-15 platform (especially a SBR) can be much better than a pistol or shotgun platform. Legit lol'd at the thought of this guy getting an 870, loading it with slugs and then thinking he's good to go.

The first issue if youre worried about collateral damage is to choose the correct round. For example, for home defense I only use hollow points. People telling you to use shotguns dont really know what theyre talking about- unless you've got a long hallway (or fatal funnel) and are sitting there waiting for them you'll want to have use a SBR, pistol or both depending on time constraints. The 5.56/.223 round drops FPS when it makes contact faster than a dirty whore drops their panties, if anything a 9mm FMJ round will penetrate more walls.

The Mossberg/Remingtons are great for breaching, though.

870 is an excellent choice for a first shotgun. Like others have said, look into any type of AR15 platform as well.

Picked up a Mossberg 500 Thunder Ranch edition a few years back. With a short 18.5" barrel and door breacher-type muzzle it makes for an intimidating presence.

Not sure what you’re arguing against in my post.

ITT brahs talk about home defense when OP specifically said he's not buying a shotgun for home defense.

AR is a better gun to own unless you’re taking up clays/trap or bird hunting

I just picked up one of these. 7" barrel easier to wield around inside the house than a standard 16" AR

Cliffs, 00 buck and 5.56 both go through drywall equivalent to at least four interior walls. If you fire rounds in your house, they may stop, but because they hit a stud or other object like your fridge, door frame, microwave, etc. They also may be stopped by exterior brick walls.

If you have to shoot someone in your house, shoot accurately. You can do some clever things to mitigate misses though. In my house anyway I sleep on the left side of the bed because if I were on the right side and shooting at the bedroom door, the dogs' crate would be in the line of fire.

5.56 AR15 should be your next purchase.

as for the 870, its a great shotgun, but i prefer the mossberg 590.
