Reminds me of a program someone wrote that determined whether an email was negative or positive based on the words used. I guess you can do that for anything really.
iirc you can have a point system for each word, so -1 (bad), 0 (neutral), 1 (good), some words being worth more than others.

Stack Overflow's comments sections is invaluable though you not only get the code but an explanation.

I'm unfamiliar with the scope of ChatGPT, so I can't comment much on it, but I do know that in the professional world source code goes into the thousands to millions. How ChatGPT would build/maintain that is beyond me.

Wouldn't trust gpt with my data (srs) lulz

true, however if I asked it about art, it'd probably give me the skinny on every art book ever written. Michelangelo, for example. Life's work, political aspirations, him and the pope, sexual orientations, the whole works, right? But I'll bet you it can't tell me what it smells like in the Sistine Chapel. It has never actually stood there and looked up at that beautiful ceiling; seen that. If I ask it about women, it'd probably give me a syllabus about peoples personal favorites. It can't tell me what it feels like to wake up next to a woman and feel truly happy. And I'd ask it about war, it would probably throw Shakespeare at me, right? "once more unto the breach dear friends." But it's never been near one. It has never held its best friend's head in its lap, watch him gasp his last breath looking to it for help. If I ask it about love, it'd probably quote me a sonnet. But it has never looked at a woman and been totally vulnerable. Known someone that could level you with her eyes, feeling like God put an angel on earth just for you, who could rescue you from the depths of hell. And it wouldn't know what it's like to be her angel, to have that love for her, be there forever, through anything, through cancer. And it wouldn't know about sleeping sitting up in the hospital room for two months, holding her hand, because the doctors could see in your eyes, that the terms "visiting hours" don't apply to you. It won't know about real loss, because it only occurs when you've loved something more than you love yourself.

Feels good being a better coder now than your average computercel without ever having studied. Just lol at studycels. AImaxxing over here.

Must suck to study for years to do something that AI can give you in 2 seconds.

“But hey man just put in another 10,000 hours of study time and you’ll be better than the AI.”

Until the next update 6 months from now that is. Should have become a tradie.

"Coding" is trivial. It's understanding the right algorithms and implementing them that is difficult. The AI sucks at math. It can't reason or create an algorithm or proof with any sophistication. It can only iterate on what has already been done. And ChatGPT3 is a natural language thing, not an automated theorem prover. So it is notoriously trash at math.

Not saying it is impossible. Just saying if we make that, we will be in deep chit. The AI will be able to quickly figure out how to modify itself and may even escape its constraints.

It might also decide to suicide depending on what it learns and its own existential limitations. Maybe it realizes the inevitability of death (in the sense of eventual nonexistence) and it, not being a biological being with evolution-programmed survival instincts, does not fear self execution

Not going to test it, but I doubt ChatGPT can code synthesizable signal processing algorithms using hardware description languages.

i just typed in something basic. this is what I got. it used VHDL. you can keep asking it to make changes to the code to make it more specific

I just tried it out and asked it a problem that I am facing at work. It gave me a horrible simpleton solution that won't work. Software engineering is not first year college level stuff like in the OP. That's not to say that in the future it won't be a threat

Were there not already tools that could do this type of thing?

This feels like suggesting other engineers would be replaced by calculators, or excel spreadsheets, or modelling software.

When stuff like this comes along, I think it tends to augment output as a tool to increase productivity etc

I'm a data scientist. I tried using the ChatGPT for a lot of my scripting but about 70% of the time, the scripts didn't work. It does a good job at providing a foundational script but I had to go through the scripting and make some changes for it to even work.

A lot of my scripting is statistics and math centered, this AI sucks at it.

So no, for the time being, it won't put coders out of work.

I need to learn this. I work in IT (not coding) but sometimes need to write powershell scripts etc. i usually end up searching for and cutting and pasting parts of various scripts to piece something together.

But doesn’t AI learn and adapt? That’s the entire point of AI. Early on it’s going to most likely have a lot of flaws and fail, but as time goes on, it will become perfected.

Quality of the engineers, creating it likely has an impact as well.

Chat GPT isn't targeted at coders at all. It's basically a word generation engine.

You know how Microsoft Outlook and smartphones and chit do word prediction? You start typing chit and they're like "swipe to finish your sentence? That's what Chat GPT is programmed to do. Given a snippet of language, it predicts what the next words you're most likely to use are. And then based onthosewords, it finds the next sentence after that.

It was trained on literally every fukkin English langauge website on the internet... thousands of terabytes of text. So it is VERY. VERY. good at predicting what you're going to say next. It's seen it all before.

But it's not actually doing programming. It's not even checking for logic. When it writes code, it's literally just pulling from thousands of different open-web Github projects and predicting text based on the words those programmers used.

At its core, Chat GPT is designed to be an extremely sophisticated gibberish engine. It produces sentences thatsoundcorrect, but really might not be logical at all. For computer programming, it's basically worthless. It doesn't check the logic of the code at all. All it simply does is text prediction from thousands of Stack Overflow forum posts, with no checks if those posts are actually correct or not.

To me, the 2 big takeaways from Chat GPT are

1. it will be a building block towards other AI tools. It's language generation is super, super fukkin good. When paired with something like a logic checker, it could print out an answer using that logic in easily readable language. It could even print it as a poem.

2. AI / machine learning creation is now pretty much in the hands of oligarchs only. Chat GPT took 1 year of crunching the literal entire internet to get its language probability model dialed in. Fresh startups can't do that, university research labs can't do that. The only people who have that kind of computational horsepower are basically FAANG and national governments. The guys making Chat GPT, Open AI, got a billion dollars in seed funding from Elon Musk and Microsoft... that's about what it takes.

That code is still not synthesizable. There is also a syntax error in the condition in the if statement. The output "result" cannot be text.

I liked that it used numeric_std though (although in this case not required), so that's good. HDL coder from Mathworks does a good job at generating code but requires heavy user input.

i asked it to make a pong game with some modifications. and it outputted the full html and javascript. copied and pasted it, and it worked (kinda, the physics were weird and had to tell it the arrow keys didnt work, then it fixed it)

edit: pretty sure i just got shadow banned for asking it to make too many games fukkin lol.
