You libs throw out unrealistic political-points subjects to buy votes from the mentally-weak, knowing that they will not pass Congress and knowing they are not even constitutional. Then, when they do not pass or finally go through SCOTUS, you blame republicans in unison and queue up the MSM to have mental breakdowns because you cannot accept the law and cannot accept the SCOTUS decisions.

Then, all you do is throw out insults and state how horrible the right is for following the laws.

Liberals are losers. Sore AF Losers.

Try building up votes honestly for once instead of dishonestly buying votes. All you guys do is demonize everyone for not agreeing with you perverts.

I'm not too surprised that his worldview is the next election cycle is more important than common sense laws. Somehow having 51% of Congress is the end all be all of politics.

Libs are too absorbed with trans-everything and flaming laws that don't go their way. America has had enough and why the exodus of people, families, business are moving out of these insane States that do not incentivize people and families and businesses, but focus on culture wars and stupidity.

"Forgiveness" was never built into student loans.
So we've clarified that PPP was actually a loan and that the narrative of "you take a loan you pay it back" is bullchit.

The reality is if you take a loan then you adhere to the terms and conditions of the loan agreement.

Those terms and conditions are not necessarily static and in fact student loan terms and conditions are frequently revised. There were major changes in 2007 adding PSLF that arguably screwed over all the public employees who already paid their loans per the previous terms and excluded all of non-public employees entirely.

So the "It's not faaaaaair" argument is bullchit too even though I understand why it's a major part of the discussion.

There is obviously debate on the "never, any" part of that. We know terms can be changed, we're left with identifying the authority and mechanism for revisions, which is what the SC ruling was actually about. I agree it would be best if congress addressed it. The executive may also have the authority but so far it looks like they don't to the extent they wanted with the method they tried. Just like with affirmative action, these rulings are narrow though and still leave quite a few options.

That 13% is roughly 40 million americans, of whom are now the largest voting block demographically. It doesn't seem like a lot, but its certainly enough to turn a purple state blue. Yes, it sucks that everything has to be political, but if republicans have any hope of ever winning anything ever again, they're going to have to compromise and quit sticking their nose in things that have been in place for decades (ex; abortion). I'm not sure who's telling them that is a winning strategy because its not. Its too late to do anything now, but their anger needed to be quelled so they would be less motivated to go out and vote.

The pin-pointed anger comes from the fact that we throw billions at foreign countries and for Defense. We as a nation are always wasting money. If our tax dollars are going to be wasted, can it for once be wasted on the people that actually live here?

and I get it, "schadenfreude" feels pretty damn good when its someone that is perceived as your political adversary, but (and i've said this in other threads on this subject) this really gives off winning the battle but losing the inevitable (2024 elections) war.

and finally, lets be honest. Its not like, because they struck down the $10k payments on student loans they're going to appropriate that money to something more, well, appropriate. Its going to be used for Ukraine or Israel or 12 dozen, $5million a piece, experimental ICBMs that we blow up in the atmosphere, and the frivolous spending for all that chit will pass the House and Senate (with bipartisan support) without a flick of dissent.

This is not true. Polling has showed that more voters are against this than for loan forgiveness. That 13% is overruled by the 87% who paid their loans, or didn't get one to begin with.

You're right, but we're well past all of that.

For many of these students, not even the $10k-$20k would be enough to dig them out of the hole they're in. There are tons of stories of people who have been paying on their student loans for 10-15 years and owe MORE than what they took out because they've only able to afford the minimum payments which exceeds the monthly accrued interest. Short of winning the lottery or realizing they are the recipient of some unknown inheritance, its essentially a bill that they will owe the federal government until the die. The idea of someone like this ever starting a family and especially owning a house as a distant of a pipe-dream as taking a rocket to Mars and living in a space colony.

The Department of Education actually trolled people on twitter linking the suicide-help hotline shortly after the ruling was struck down, and I guess it would be easy to laugh at that, but its not funny to laugh at someone that simply doesn't know how things work. Its like laughing at someone with Down's Syndrome.

again, 13% scattered about the country is still enough to turn a purple state blue or to encourage someone who wasn't really politically engaged to go out and vote. That little bit matters a lot when boomers are dying out and being replaced by Gen Z who are more and more becoming eligible to vote, and again, under a normal economic or political climate this wouldn't matter since kids don't really vote, but now, they are paying attention.

Then don't major in something worthless, where you're still paying off a debt 20 years later.

And you just compared these individuals with massive debt, to the mentally retarded???

Paths in life change
Markets change

A lot can happen in 4 years. I understand its much easier to rationalize this mess assuming every person strapped with debt is some art history major that got their degree from a $25k/year university, but its more complicated than that;

-Jobs that were once considered lucrative careers are not anymore due to over-saturation, which leads to lower wages for that role, IF you can find a job in that field.

-Some people go to college, but for various reasons drop out or get sick (cancer) or injured and cannot complete their degree program but are still strapped with the debt.

-Some people were coached into a degree program by an advisor under the guise that it had the potential to be lucrative, but it wasn't.

-and some jobs are actually needed in this country (Elementary/Highschool teachers) that require a significant amount of schooling, but pay chit for wages. What incentive is there to become a teacher when it costs $80k to complete the degree program, but when you graduate you'll only make about $35-$45k in the first 10 years of teaching?

and I realize all of this can be dismissed by simply saying"pay off the loan you agreed upon"the difference is, all of these things can happen to people that take out loans for businesses and houses and cars. However, in the absolute worst case scenario, those individuals can just file for bankruptcy and have it expunged from their record. Not the same for student loan borrowers.

What has happen is, these borrowers took on new debt (most of which unwillingly) due to inflation. The few hundred bucks they had remaining per month that would have gone towards their loan, is now being use to pay off some credit card debt. Whats going to happen is, they'll somehow scrape to make the minimum monthly payments that won't put a dent in the principle and they pay on it for the next 50 years, and when they die their $50k loan is left at $2million. The others who cannot make payments will have their wages garnished under and already stressful economic time, they'll be unable to pay rent or pay for fuel for their car. They lose their job, become homeless and then turn to crime which affects us all. If the later scenario happen to even 15% of the 40 million borrowers thats 6 million borrowers. If you divide that up evenly among all 50 states thats roughly 120k people per state thrown into economic turmoil. Those are economy disrupting numbers (well, moreso than it already is).

___
I guess comparing them to someone that is mentally retarded is a bit strong. More like financial immaturity.

Correct. How many times does this need to be said? The terms of PPP laid out explicit "forgiveness" paths. Student loans do not, and never did.

Changes enactedthrough law and the legislative process. House passes a bill, Senate passes a bill, reconcile if different, send to the President for signature and enactment into law.

Not a President taking unilateral, illegal action which also happens to add $400 Billion to the federal debt, at the expense of every taxpayer.

There wasNo Appropriation for $400 Billionto cover Biden's student loan forgiveness, so there's no way to appropriate it elsewhere. That's the point. He just wanted to unilaterally add to the federal debt, without Congressional authorization.

The proposal to do so still failed to pass the House, but if its money for Israel, then we're just a blank check to be abused and are at their beck-and-call.

Here's what else is not the same:
- When a bank loans money to a business, that's a risk based on the business plan. If the business fails, the bank absorbs the cost for making a bad decision. If the bank makes too many of these decisions, they also go bankrupt.
- When a mortgage company issues a mortgage to someone who can't afford it, and they go bankrupt, the mortgage company absorbs the cost for making a bad decision. Too many bad decisions by the mortgage company and... they also go bankrupt.
- When a bank finances a car for someone who can't afford it, and the owner goes bankrupt and/or the car is repossessed for non-payment, the bank pays the bill.

But when the federal government magically "forgives" student loans for no reason other than the President wanted to buy some votes, thetaxpayers and the federal debtpay for it. So there's no incentive for any sort of sanity in approving loans, such as selection of degree, selection of least-expensive school, requiring work & income by the student, etc. Just a spending free-for-all, then cry and demand Government (taxpayers) foot the bill.

You're confusing things. Purple states aren't for student debt forgiveness. People with most of these loans are young Dems in blue states. So yes, it's redmeat to the Left, but everyone else don't care much at all. because again we're talking 13% of people. Trying to give away taaxpayer funds could very well cost Dems votes in purple states, not earn. You think those who paid theirs, and dealing with every matters wants to hear millennials whining?

The answer is to stop giving away taxpayer money, not just keep spending.

Okay. Earlier you said I was being very deceptive when I stated the program was a loan with conditions for repayment.

Not a President taking unilateral, illegal action which also happens to add $400 Billion to the federal debt, at the expense of every taxpayer.
The law gave the education secretary the authority to "waive or modify" conditions of the student loan program (during times of emergency), unilaterally, and that could result in an increase to the federal debt at the expense of the taxpayer. The secretary under the Trump admin in fact did this, by pausing payments and accrual of interest while still counting each month of $0 payment towards qualifying payments for one of the existing forgiveness programs and against the 20 year expiration for most other loans.

This isn't a constitutional question over the power of the purse, it was a simple interpretation of the HEROES Act and that the authority to "modify" was taken too far beyond the original intent.

Banks and mortgages are backed by the federal government so we foot the bill for those failures too.

Yes, maybe student loans being paid off might bring in some Biden votes. However, it could also cause a backlash that will at least negate some of those votes and could even result in a backfire. Depends on how the GOP candidate plays it.

What bothers me is how Biden wants to just pay off the student loans with no other reforms which means we will be visiting this problem down the line, sooner than you think. When the auto companies and banks were bailed out back in the recession there were regulations and all kinds of stipulations put in place and even then they had to pay it back. This is much different.

Watch, if they pay off the loans, college tuition will rise even more. The financial aid people will probably tell students "the government will eventually just pay it for you". Oh, it's going to get worst.

I agree with this too. $10 - $20K against the principle doesn't do much of anything for the borrowers $80K in debt.

If we're going to spend $400B it might be better to use it to fund an interest reduction.

I would support interest reduction. Even 0% as long as you are up to date on payments. Reward good behavior, not bad behavior.

Speaking of rewarding bad behavior, no doubt as soon as they get that 10-20K, the first thing you'll hear is "it wasn't enough" and they will scream even louder for more, and confident they will get it because they did the first time. From there I wonder what other financial responsibilities people will ask the government to take care of for them?

hah, I wish I can be as optimistic as you, because i'm not seeing that trend at all. Whether its a red blue or purple state, GenZ+Millineals are a much larger demographic than the dwindling boomers base, most often over-represented in these polls.
