And trust me, it happens with CPD as well. You get that bump in pay after your first year, and young officers are buying 60 grand BMW's, or some other overpriced sports car, where they'll be paying 750 dollars a month for the next 6 years.

What will happen is that the number of businesses that pay off student loans will increase (we do it).
Entry level folks think they are the chit and demand unrealistic salaries that would lead to you having to raise the salaries of everybody above them.
Instead of raising entry level salaries to levels that would cause an upwards cascade, you increase the benefits package of all employees to include loan repayments.
The public sector already has the 10 year scheme in many areas. You could increase that to teaching and medicine, where people who teach in public schools and work in public hospitals qualify for loan repayments.
You use repayments to incentivize people to work in areas that are less attractive from a recruitment perspective.
If people want the public to give them something (loan repayments), then they have to give the public something in return.

Face it, let's say someone's parents decide to pay for their child's education. If their child drops out, the parents aren't getting that money back.

You borrowed money and you can pay it TF back. It's really not that complicated at all.

You then have the people thathavebeen making regular payments, but can only afford the minimum balance so after 10 years they owemorethan the original amount they took out since the accrued interest is more than the minimum monthly bill.
And yes people are bad with money and made stupid decisions and in a perfect world they should pay it back, but is it right that they should just be stuck with a loan that is essentially a "forever-bill" that will forever get larger and larger until they die because of a bad decision they made some 10-15 years ago?
The absolute only recourse for them is to stop paying, have their wages garnished, then they don't have enough to pay rent, they lose their job, become homeless and now the government has no means of siphoning money from them. And once they're homeless they stay homeless forever because as soon as they get a little money the government just takes it away. It's that okay for the system to work that way?

Nobody forced them to take out a huge loan, to go to some ivy league university.
Are they even working while they're going to school?

But the gender studies major, the under-qualified goober who had no business in college in the first place, or the person who decided after getting their degree that they just don't like their job? They can pay for it themselves.

But it's a good question. Only like 60% of students graduate with a degree, so it's a problem when they borrow but don't even have the Women's Studies degree to show for it. We can't ignore the current mess, but the solution here is not to let anyone get in this position to begin with.
One possibility is an automatic Pell grant for every freshman to weed out the tire kickers. If they succeed to some high standard then they earn access to low cost loans to finish up.
Jeb Bush had a pretty good plan. Give everyone access to a $50K line of credit that's paid back through withholding taxes, 1% of income per year per $10K borrowed for some period of time.
This used to be a topic that conservatives were on board with and would at least discuss because they understood the importance of it. It's not about the money either, I've read we already spend enough on higher education to make it more or less "free" for everyone if you cut support to private schools or something like that. And a lot of y'all are correct, I don't know WTF you do when everything is about racism and diversity instead of best man or woman wins.

Often times for the STEMS, the course load is too rigorous to work, and just because you major in a STEM doesn't mean you're financially secure. Unless you're going to grad school and taking out an even LARGER loan to apply for a professional program, med school/law school/PhD program, the majority of the jobs in the life and physical sciences and math fields pay poverty wages.
The way the system is currently set up, the only way people can be financially responsible is to simply not go to college and only the rich should be allowed to go while the phlebs like us toil away as electricians and plumbers.....the very jobs our parents told us we would be working (as a scare tactic) if we didn't go to college.
I'm not pushing the blame on boomers (although some of them did cosign off on these loans) but through out the 90s it was drilled into their heads that they had to go to college or else they would be flipping burgers for a living....I'm sure you heard that line in some capacity while growing up. So, they went to college because they were told that they would have high paying jobs waiting for them when we got out. And now, they don't.

Either way, the information regarding what they'll pay to go to college and what teachers earn is readily available before they make any choice, which your post even highlights.
If would-be teachers can't even do basic math figuring out how their future earnings will stack up against what they'll have to pay back, are they even fit to be teachers?
Further, if they're happy to take out loans on the backs of their fellow citizens and taxpayers but then decide they just don't want to pay them back, should we reward that type of person with a position of influence over children? Seems like they're unfit.
Your entire point is rendered moot anyways by the fact that teachers get their student loans completely expunged after a certain period of time, and the Biden admin is making it even easier for them to do so now. All they have to do is not pay for x number of years and their debt is moved from their shoulders to the taxpayer's.

You repay 6% of what you earn over $32k until it's either paid back or you age out of it (they write it off after 30 years, or at 65)
Interest is charged at base rate +1%, which is about as good as it gets.

My ex racked up about $30K in debt on student loans getting an associates in business. she's an idiot so she of course can't do anything with it and she can't hold a decent paying job. She will never be able to repay that loan and it will ruin her for life. I know of several people like that where they went to college to make mom proud or just to do anything besides actually go to work and now they are farked. A lot of people do well in school but flop in the real world. There are also those who just don't have very good work ethic or drive and can never figure out how to accel in a career. A lot of people in fields they don't fit them very well. Or they don't fit that field.

You major in history, if you're retired, and maybe want to learn about history. Or better yet, don't major in history, and just read books about history.
Had an ex who majored in Art History, she worked at McDonald's till she was like 25 years old, and what did she do afterwards? She taught high school Art at the high school we went to......

It's a hot night. The mind races. You think about your knife: the only friend who hasn't betrayed you, the only friend who won't be dead by sunup. Sleep tight mates, in your quilted chambray night shirts.

How is there a system in place in this country with no means of escape? There are many paths we can choose in life, and no matter how bad things get there is an proverbial "out" to restart our lives and try again, but not for student loan debt....and its all subsidized by the government, just like going into the military.Sorry bro, I am... But at the end of the day you/they had other options besides going to a loan shark, didn't you. As I said, the military paid for my education completely and I never borrowed a single penny. Thousands upon thousands of others have went that route too.
For the record, i'm doing fine on my student loan, i'm just about done paying mine off since i've been chipping away at it since it was placed on pause, but I know more than a handful IRL and have been reading lots stories of people that have not been as fortunate as I have. I graduated at just the right time, got into my field (which was pandemic/recession proof) to allow me to get promotions to make more money. I even got my apartment before the start of the pandemic so my rent (even for this nice area in UTC) is pretty damn cheap...but if there was one aspect in my life that was out of alignment I'd most likely be phucked, and instead of being able to take care of my parents with the money i'm making, I would have been a burden probably having to move back in with them with my tail between my legs.

And the loan shark probably promised you riches beyond your wildest dreams once you got your degree and joined the elite group of "educated professionals" too.. didn't he. Probably pay off your $100k loan in six months or some shiit you thought.. didn't you.
So you chose the loan shark option, didn't you.
Face it, you made a bad choice, and now that reality is sinking in you've got regrets. Don't you.
