Fact: America has the deepest pool of athletic talent in the world, by far.

Fact: America DOMINATES the summer olympics every single time despite the huge disadvantage of very little government funding.

Fact: America prefers strength and speed based athletics, not manlets throwing themselves at the ground.

I'm British and think the best football match pales in comparison to the best basketball game. That said Americans are defo coping re not being in the world cup. The high schools in my surrounding area don't even have soccer teams. I think once upon a time some might have had girls soccer teams, but not anymore. Kids here don't really care about it. If we did have soccer teams, those kids would probably be made fun of just as much as the marching band geeks. It's just not really in our culture and considered a beta sport where I'm from. Even if the US was competitive in the world cup I honestly wouldn't watch or care because the sport doesn't entertain me.

Spain's Barcelona and Real Madrid are No. 1 and No. 2, ESPN's charts show. The average annual pay on those teams: $8.7 million per player at Barcelona and $7.8 million per player at Real Madrid. They were the top 2 last year as well.

England's Manchester City and Chelsea are Nos. 3 and 4. Pay at Man City averages $7.5 million a year. At Chelsea, the average is $6.8 million.

The first U.S. team in the top 10: the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers. The team's $6.3 million average salary brings it in at No. 5. Just three U.S. teams are in the top 10 — the others are the New York Yankees, at No. 6, and the Philadelphia Phillies, at No. 9.

It seems like most other countries struggle to realize that we aren't just uninterested in soccer, but actively hate it. Parents are embarrassed if their kids aren't athletic enough to play football or basketball and have to resort to soccer. Sloots here laugh at soccer players because all the Chads play football. Literally every kid in school and half the local town goes to the high school football games. You might see a few parents at the soccer game. My city actually has a pro team, but I swear I only ever hear of the most feminine of reddit soy boys going to games.

What's the number of U.S. soccer players who are playing in the top five leagues (Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, Serie A and Bundesliga)?

Likely less than 50?

The US has a problem with developing soccer talent because kids don't grow up here wanting to be a soccer superstar. The MLS is only 21 years old and doesn't have the draw necessary to make soccer interesting for Americans. And the path to playing for a European league is challenging (need either a European passport/dual citizenship, or a work permit).

Brazil/Argentina/France exportso manysuccessful footballers to European leagues or leagues that pay well that the chance of 1) getting onto a team and 2) making decent money is much more slim than if someone played American football or basketball.

It's classic cope, but I don't really get why they're so insecure. We have 10x more elite athletes than any other country. Of course the US is going to dominate any sport it chooses. It reminds me of feminists who get mad about men being better at sports than women.

I don't think the rest of the world really appreciates just how little the US cares about soccer. It's literally just a weekend time waster for preteen kids who's parents won't let them play football.

Getting a game of soccer outside of middle school playground is pretty much impossible. Virtually no high schools have teams, and if they do there are literally no tryouts. You show up, you're on the team. If you are even lucky enough to have a team near you, you have to share the field with the football team with makeshift nets ghetto rigged out of goalposts, and if the footballers want the field to practice you are getting kicked off
