The fact that people in this thread equate setting boundaries and discipline with physically hitting your child basically summarizes the debate on spanking.
If the only way your child will listen to you is if you hit them than you have failed as a parent.
Good parents have kids that repsect them bexuae they are their parent, not because they are afraid for thei physical well-being.

Just lol @ people that think the purpose of butt spanking is to make your child fear you. A good butt paddle when you get out of line teaches humility.

For the child beaters here
How long will you beat them till? What age is the cut off? When they can fight back and whoop you?
How often are you gonna do it? Every time they act up?

Yeah I used to be in the 'spanking is fine' category but basically every study says that it increases later problems in life so facts > my feels.
FWIW I'm the oldest of 3, I got some spanks, next kid very few because it behaved, last one none because Mom had worked out better ways to get compliance even that was probably the trickiest child to deal with.
My take is that there are better methods than corporal punishment, the problem is the people least able to implement them (i.e. stupid, poorly educated, angry, have own issues etc.) are the ones most inclined towards spanking or worse.
EDIT
Also my wife has permanent hearing loss in one ear because her father clouted her round the head when she did something wrong. Guy was basically the role model angry dad. Unsurprisingly, she now has issues with men who display anger to her.

Let me guess ITT: People with no kids comment on what scientists with no kids tell people with kids how to raise them
This chit keeps getting said. If people want to spank their kids go for it. Discipline is good for a kid. The whole never physically harm your kid thing is just weird 1st world people crap.
I also think it's easy for people with no kids to talk about never doing it. Hard to not do it once you're dealing with your kids everyday.
I'm also a bit skeptical of causation for spanking causing those problems. Maybe correlation but that seems rather iffy.

1. On what basis would throw researchers not have kids?
2. This isn't set thought experiment. They just look at kids who were/were not spanked as a child and then look at how the kids do later in life.
Believe it or not, data is better than your anecdote
As I said before, the fact you equate discipline with physically hurting children is really all you need to know you see why your argument is flawed.

The disconnect between the 'experts' and ordinary people (in this case actual parents) is enormous.
I'll give you an example, in university we studied some dumb sloot called Montessori who had grand ideas about how children should be raised.
Long story short she was a terrible mother herself and even abandoned her own child.

They just look at kids who were or were not spanked and then look at how they do later in life.
Spoiler, every single study on this issue has found the kids who werent hit do better.
This is the same logic as saying only researchers who smoke can accurately identify whether smoking causes cancer.

Look at who people who smoke vs people who do not. Then look at who develops lung cancer.
Here, look at people who were spanked vs people who are not. Then look at how they do later in life.
Again, this isn't some "expert" just sitting in their office coming up with parenting stratagies. This is done by looking at what happens in the real world.

And I definitely agree. Hard to always be calm and collected. People are emotional so I think expecting total rationality is just not in our nature, which is why I am fine with kids being spanked occasionally. We all lose our cool every once in a while and that is okay. What I'm saying isn't aimed at you but think some people seem to expect parents to never fly off the handle.

Spanking breeds stupidity and is done by stupid parents.
The idea that a person is doing something "bad" is incorrect. The person doing it thinks it's good, so they only way they can and will stop that is by learning. They must learn why you believe it's bad and you must convince them.
So, parents can only correct behavior by teaching the kid to think differently.
Pain and punishment cause children to become liars and sneaks.
Ghetto:
Ghetto types always promote beating children.
Who are the most violent and dysfunctional people who never ever do anything right in America, perhaps in the history of humanity even?
You know who.
Ask that type of person what they think and they will promote beating, not an intellectual approach, yet all of their parenting fails.

I'd beat my wife for misbehaving before my children. At least she is grown and ought to know better. Kids don't know better and it's up to you to teach them. If they keep doing the same things after knowing it's wrong though I might have to consider it.
