I'm skeptical when somebody says "I do boxing". Within the sport of boxing its universal that people say "I box". I've been around boxing for many years never heard a serious boxer say "I do boxing".

Last time I checked, bodybuilding required none of these with the exception of getting stronger to gain more size, but again, you're not judged on your strength, you're judged on your appearance on stage.

Brb, having elite genetics, copious amounts of skittles on hand, and the time to lift weights and shove down copious amounts of food all day then subsequently starving yourself makes someone an athlete. Doesn't matter if you can't walk up a flight of stairs without getting winded.
I consider the BB women's fitness division highly skilled and talented athletes (gymnasts and dancers).
Fact: My first-generation uncle was a boxer who fought Sugar Ray Robinson! He also fought in the war, sacrificing the career he deeply loved, so people could have the right to freedom.

The non-lifting group showed an increase in LBM. That's due to increased water and glycogen retention, not muscle gain.

It's likely not all water retention, but I'm sure a lot of it is.

This line of thinking implies that becoming a world class bodybuilder requires world class athletic ability as opposed to a world class ability to absorb drugs without dying which is a pre-requisite for competing in the Mr Olympia. It takes the latter, not the former.

If these people genuinely had world class athletic ability, they'd be competing in actual sports for baller money instead of (unless they're like the top 7 best in the world) sucking dick for drug money in order to compete. Or selling drugs for drug money.

BRB world class athletic ability and you class yourself as an athlete and not a pageant entrant
BRB don't use it to compete in a sport that pays millions even though you're athlete
BRB instead pay tens of thousands of dollars a year out of your own pocket to come 9th in the Ogdenville Pro and 8th in the North Haverbrook Pro

Look, pro bodybuilders are admirable in as much as it takes immense dedication, sacrifice, focus and guts to do it. But let's not pretend that even the gym work needed to get there takes athletic ability or that the competitors are athletes. It's a niche beauty pageant where you win or lose based on literally nothing except appearance and occasionally politics. It's not a weight lifting competition. It's closer to sculpting.

There are competitors in the Mr O who can't even do that since they lose control of their gut when they transition from one pose to the next. Talking top 5 guys here.

As it happens, though, I don't think he was referring to the event itself but rather the gym work it takes to look like they do. Though when you look at the gym work they do, it does not take any more actual athletic ability than what most people possess. It's just that most people don't have the inclination, the time or the drugs for recovery to do it as constantly as they do. Or the drive to be fair. They also then don't have the inclination to eat all the food required, take all the other drugs needed to assist in growth or have the aesthetic muscle insertions or reactions to drugs which makes their muscles LOOK a certain way.

Most people don't consider the trade off of becoming a walking pharmaceutical experiment (and paying top-dollar for it) with the associated health consequences versus the relatively meager pay offs to be worth it. Many do though. Among these people, it's a race to see who can take the most drugs and then seeing who reacts the best to it...not even in terms of who becomes better at lifting weights or cardio, but in terms of muscles becoming more aesthetic in their appearance.

But, no, they're right. They're totally in the same category as Roger Federer, The Williams sisters, Usain Bolt and LeBron James.

Posing the right way is way more difficult than you think. Some pros need oxygen when they get off stage. If you had a significant amount of muscle mass you might understand that it is difficult to flex full out for 5 minutes straight.

I used to laugh at calling bodybuilders athletes too, but then you realize they really do excel at physical activity, it's just that they don't compete based on it, they compete based off their looks.

But clearly any bodybuilder would out lift an average joe. But chest workouts aren't a sport or competition so we don't make the connection.

What's the consensus on powerlifting? Is it a sport? Are powerlifters atheletes? I think this would tie in somehow seeing as the two are linked through activity.

Let's face it, with the state these people are in by the time they get on stage, they'd need oxygen after a game of bowling.

Yes, people competing against each other at a designated time and place to see who can perform the best in a physical activity where the winner is the one who uses their strength, explosive ability, focus in the moment, coordination and technique to lift the most is a sport. You win based on performing better than your competitors on the day.

There is no comparison to bodybuilding.

I agree with this. I'm just playing devil's advocate here. I've always honestly wondered ever since Arnold's retirement speech in pumping iron where he said "it's the greatest sport" .
